Birding and Nature Photography in Junction Texas and Kimble County
The Texas Hill Country provides wonderful places to view nature. Come with binoculars and camera in hand to learn why the Land of Living Waters is a bird watchers paradise.
In the Junction and Kimble County area, birders have opportunities to see Zone Tail Hawk, endangered Black-capped Vireo, Painted Bunting, Vermillion Flycatcher, Green Herons, Black-throated and Rufous-crowned sparrows, or any of the 249 bird species that have been documented in Kimble County.
Most can be seen either on the South Llano River State Park or the Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area during different periods of the year. The common Western Screech Owl has also been documented on the Buck Area for the past several years.
The Texas Tech Junction campus, City Park, Water Treatment Plant, and Heart of Texas-West birding location on CR 181 at Lovers Leap hill provide excellent viewing opportunities.
South Llano State Park and Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area have observation blinds available for wildlife viewing and photography. South Llano River State Park also offers miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, and a protected Rio Grande Turkey nesting habitat. Trails lead into the adjoing Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area.
Wildlife movements are at the highest during dawn and dusk hours of the day. Wildlife viewing may be difficult during periods of good forage conditions within the dense vegetation of the Buck Area. Visitors to the Buck Area may want to visit any of the water sources found early in the morning or late afternoon in order to improve their odds of viewing wildlife.
