Devils Sinkhole State Natural Area

Over 1,800 acres of rugged land comprise the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area. The Devil's Sinkhole is the main attraction. It is the largest single chamber cavern in the state of Texas and the third deepest in the State measuring over 350 feet deep! The Sinkhole is a collapsed limestone cavern with an opening at its top 45 to 65 feet in diameter. Approximately 150 feet from the surface is the top of a mountain contained within the cavern. The Devil's Sinkhole was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1971. Adding to the allure of the Devil's Sinkhole are the millions of Brazilian freetail bats that pour out at dusk like a tornado. During the "bat season", April through October, after the bats have returned for the summer, guided tours are offered Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Located in Rocksprings - approximately a one hour drive from Junction.
